Harvested from the gardens at Monticello.
When Thomas Jefferson noted the "Lychnis bloom" at Shadwell in 1767, he was probably referring to the wooly-leaved, self-seeding Rose Campion, a biennial or short-lived perennial popular in early American gardens. It has attractive magenta or white flowers in early summer as well as ornamental, silver foliage that resembles Lamb's Ears (Stachys byzantina). Rose Campion was sold by Bernard McMahon, the Philadelphia nurseryman, in 1804.

Sow seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before last frost date at 70 degrees F. Transplant to 3" pots once they have several true leaves, then harden off and plant outdoors after last frost. Approximately 90-95 seeds per packet.
